6/01/22 Week 7:

Response to:  How are Culture and Psychology affect the mind?

Brother Ivers (BYU Idaho) explains in his class, that there are many different races under many different circumstances under many different stereotypes and ideologies that affect the mind in each culture. I am from a culture different the North American culture, but fortunately, in my home, there aren't elements of my culture that are irrationally causing me to have low self-esteem. On the contrary, each challenge that I had to overcome to adapt to this new culture has made me stronger. But looking at my children, I can see some differences between them; my older son arrived here at 16 years old, and the younger of 4 years old. The older is something shy person and feels shame for many things. The younger one is outgoing and doesn't feel shame in front of the majority of things, he has a completely North American culture.

In my culture, exists some stereotypes, for example, if you are learning a language, dance, art, etc. Some people start to mock your attempts because they believe making mistakes is an embarrassment. In my culture, exists some stereotypes, for example, if you are learning a language, dance, art, etc. Some people start to mock your attempts because they believe making mistakes is an embarrassment and funny. Then that produces students’ fear of do mistakes and being ridiculed. My older son learned fast English, but he sometimes feels fear to speak and be expressive, in his subconscious mind he believes that he continues living in Colombia, and will be ridiculed. We are improving our home culture by applying more concepts from North American culture and some other cultures, through this course, and also, from the gospel.  I am supporting my older son to overcome his fears and be confident in myself to start to share with the younger and adults in different spaces, and don feel fear to speak.

This experience in my home added to my academic course and showed me what is the possible situations that I will have with my TESOL students and how I can tackle them.

Is indispensable to know our students, where are they from, and how is each culture; knowledge that permits to us develop special lesson plans to achieve English class with multicultural learning, helping the students to comprehend how is each culture and how can them adapt to her.
